#GirlCrush, My style

5 minutes with actor and model Jana Kleyn

I’ve had a #girlcrush on this bohemian beauty for the last decade! After traveling and working in the states for the last two years Jana is back in the Mother City, acting, modeling AND designing her very own handbag line: Banani Bags (labeled after her nickname Banana). She shares with Sneak Peek how it all started and what never leaves her bucket bag…

Designing a bag collection is quite something! What made you venture out from acting and modeling and start Banani Bags?

I’ve always loved handbags and over the years I’ve collected quite a few from around the world. I spent my last two years in the states and when I moved back to SA I realized there was a still quite a need for more durable yet trendy leather bags in Cape Town. Being winter and quiet season as an actor and model, I decided to have some fun and get creative!

How would you describe Banani Bags? Which celebs/influencers would you love to see wearing your bags in the future?

Banani Bags are a hip take on a classic leather handbag. They are practical and well made but they are also a little unusual and retro. Banani Bags are for any woman who is wild at heart. I actually just want any unique, individual woman to rock their Banani Bag and make it their own. That said it wouldn’t hurt to see Erin Wasson or Monroe Alvarez rocking my bag!

What have been the challenges so far?

Finding the right guy to make the perfect bucket bag was somewhat of a challenge. I had a couple of unsuccessful trial-runs with other leather makers before finding someone who had the skills and integrity to deliver a solid bag that lasts. It’s generally been a learning curve as I’m great with visualizing what I want and what’s on trend but actually manufacturing Bags and knowing how to effectively run a business is something that I’ve had to learn. It’s been a great journey!

What 5 items never leave your leather bag?

  • Narciso Rodriguez perfume
  • Paw paw cream

  • Mac select cover up concealer
  •  Sunglasses
  • And finally: rollies

Describe your style with 5 adjectives?

Casual, retro, practical, comfortable, quirky.
